How to style your family Christmas photos on a budget: helpful tips and tricks

This post may contain affiliate links. This means if you purchse a product through one of my links I may recieve a small commission at no extra cost to you.

1. Figure out the setting/ background/ props and plan your family outfits around those colors!  Our amazing photographer (Brittany Steed) was nice enough to send us a preview of her set setup when we booked so I knew exactly colors to wear and which ones would blend in to the background.  For example, she was using a green velvet couch for her set, and if I would have worn a green skirt instead of cream I would have blended and possibly clashed with the couch.

2.  Create a  photo session color scheme to help you shop with the same few colors and mix and match with layers for each member of your family.   I chose plaid shirts that complemented each other but  didn't match  along with neutral bottoms (Khaki for the boys and cream for the girls).  My daughter was supposed to wear a tan/brown fur vest from Old Navy but she refused to wear it for the pictures even though we went though a try on session the day before and she loved it then! Oh well..she is two and I was just happy she semi-behaved for the pictures!

3.  To stay on budget make sure you shop ahead and don't wait until the day before to pick outfits.  Waiting until last minute will cost you more money and more stress!  I used shoes we already had and I purchased pieces I knew were functional and would be re-worn throughout the holiday season.  Getting the most bang for our buck and knowing we all have looks we can wear to a holiday function, preschool program, etc.

4. If you are having trouble deciding a color scheme for your family photos Pinterest is your best friend!  I have boards dedicated to family picture outfits and ideas for color schemes for all seasons!

5.  To shop on a budget for our family photos I first made sure I shopped from places I knew the fits and sizes and that I was signed up for their emails/ promotions/ cartwheel!  I can't tell you how much money I have saved by just entering a promo code from my email.  I also utilize sites like Retail Me Not and EBATES to find the best deals and coupons. With EBATES you can make money on your purchases!! No gimmicks, nothing sketchy, you sign up (use the EBATES link above), find the store on EBATES website and it tells you how much cash back that store is offering that day, you click through EBATES link to the store you are wanting to buy from, make your purchases and BAM that cash back is added to your account.  We have earned over $365 in FREE money this year just by using EBATES when we online shop(and I forgot to use it a lot this year )!! I was so skeptical at first but it really is simple and easy!!

6.  I also take advantage of the extra coupons you get by being a rewards member or a credit card holder!  I am a firm believer in not using your credit card unless you can pay it off immediately! Kohls and Old Navy always have extra coupons for their credit card holders and Target offers Target REDcard where you save 5% on your purchases!  If you don't have great self control or don't understand how credit cards work SKIP THIS STEP!! ( If you aren't great with credit cards or are struggling with debt we love Dave Ramsey and found debt freedom!  But...we also like to take advantage of earning money and discounts for using a store credit cards so be smart and use your credit cards wisely!)

7.  The advantage of  shopping ahead of time is you have time to watch the items you want and see how their prices fluctuate.  Combining an awesome coupon you got in your email, along with a sale they are running, and getting reward bucks or cash rewards is the jackpot of bargain shopping!! It may be a weird gift I have, or my bargain shopping brain but, I can remember exactly what things cost and how low I have seen that item go in price.  I may also be the person that shops online and then just abandons my cart after filling it up.. the key is I know what is ACTUALLY a sale and what is a sales gimmick!  Educate yourself on the items you are shopping for and you will get the best deal!

Lastly you don't have to shop at fancy stores or pay outrageous boutique prices to look put together!  Follow these tips and be amazed with how affordable looking great in family photos can be.

Listed Below are the links to the outfits we are wearing in our family pictures. I shopped at Target, Kohl's, Old Navy, Amazon and Children's Place for these outfits!
